Pen & Honey Is Building More Than a Bookstore—It’s Creating a Cultural Hub for Diverse Storytelling

In an era when independent bookstores are redefining their role in communities across the country, Pen & Honey is emerging as one of the most distinctive literary spaces championing diverse voices and cultural storytelling.

Founded by entrepreneur and author Lupe Mora de Marchante, the woman-owned, Black and Brown-led company has evolved beyond traditional bookselling into a destination where literature, community, and advocacy intersect. Through author events, strategic partnerships, and educational initiatives, Pen & Honey has positioned itself as a growing force in the independent literary landscape.

For Mora de Marchante, the journey to bookselling followed a successful international business career. Before launching Pen & Honey, she led global market expansion for consumer goods companies, helping brands navigate international growth, product development, and regulatory initiatives across multiple markets, including China. Her multilingual background and multicultural perspective became defining assets throughout her corporate career.

Everything changed after writing and self-publishing her memoir.

The experience inspired Mora de Marchante to leave the corporate world and pursue a mission centered on storytelling and access to literature, ultimately leading to the creation of Pen & Honey.

That mission continues to expand through collaborations designed to create impact beyond the bookstore. One of its most notable partnerships is with award-winning, Latina-owned Little Waves Coffee Roasters, which resulted in Librosioso, an exclusive coffee blend that supports the Books & Sueños Scholarship. The annual scholarship recognizes students whose educational journeys reflect resilience, determination, and perseverance, reinforcing Pen & Honey’s commitment to investing in future generations.

Mora de Marchante’s leadership also extends into the nonprofit sector. She serves as President of the Board of Directors for Inlandia Institute, a literary and cultural nonprofit dedicated to supporting writers, readers, and artists throughout California’s Inland Empire.

As conversations around representation in publishing continue to grow, Pen & Honey has distinguished itself by intentionally amplifying voices that have historically been underrepresented in the literary world. The bookstore has become a gathering place where readers discover new authors, engage in conversations around culture and identity, and connect through shared experiences.

While many independent bookstores focus solely on retail, Pen & Honey has embraced a broader vision—one that blends entrepreneurship with cultural advocacy and community investment. That approach has helped establish the company as an emerging destination for readers, authors, and organizations seeking meaningful engagement through literature.

With a foundation rooted in storytelling and a growing portfolio of partnerships and community initiatives, Pen & Honey continues to demonstrate that an independent bookstore can be much more than a place to buy books. Under Lupe Mora de Marchante’s leadership, it has become a platform where stories inspire dialogue, opportunity, and lasting change.
