Filmmaker and actor Alvaro Orlando brings his deeply personal comedy-drama The Pickup Artist to Hollywood for a special screening at the iconic TCL Chinese Theatre, with a red carpet beginning at 3:30 p.m. followed by the film at 4 p.m. and an after-party at the nearby Roosevelt Pool.
Written and directed by Orlando, who also stars in the film, The Pickup Artist follows a hopeless romantic navigating heartbreak, confidence and the complicated rules people are often told they must follow in order to find connection. What begins as a journey toward becoming better at dating ultimately becomes something much more personal: a search for self-worth, authenticity and the courage to stop pretending to be someone else.
The film draws inspiration from Orlando’s own evolution. Years before stepping behind the camera, Orlando gained national attention as “Kosmo,” the winner of the first season of VH1’s reality series The Pickup Artist. His experiences since then — including his work as an actor, filmmaker and relationship coach — helped shape a story that examines the distance between projecting confidence and actually possessing it.
Rather than celebrating superficial dating techniques, the film uses humor and emotional honesty to explore anxiety, loneliness, masculinity, vulnerability and self-acceptance, asking what happens when someone realizes that genuine connection cannot be manufactured through a set of rules.
At its heart, The Pickup Artist is about the universal desire to feel worthy of love and belonging — and the realization that becoming comfortable with yourself may be more important than learning how to impress anyone else.
