Continuing the Superhero Saga: Stargirl

If you, like many Americans, grew up reading comic books and watching superheroes on television, you may know there’s been a recent surge in super television shows. These shows have revitalized many minor characters and given them proper time to shine. A new superhero, Stargirl, joins these television series as a refreshing take on the former DC’s Starman.

Where Does Stargirl Fit in the DC Universe?

As those who are familiar with Starman know, Starman was a member of the Justice Society of America (JSA). The JSA was a group of superheroes that banded together to fight supervillains. According to the Stargirl series, all of the members of the JSA in this DC universe died. Starman was the last living member who, in his final breath, told Pat Dugan to find someone worthy of the cosmic staff to keep the JSA legacy alive. After 10 years, Courtney Whitmore finds and uses the cosmic staff, becoming Stargirl. From then on, Stargirl works with her fellow high school students to recreate the JSA. If you are curious where Stargirl fits into the current DC universe, Stargirl is on a parallel universe as The Arrow, as shown in a crossover episode “Crisis on Infinite Earths.”

What Makes Stargirl A Superhero Worth Watching?

With so many new superhero movies and shows, you may be wondering why Stargirl is special. Executive producers of the show, including Geoff Johns, wanted to find a way to make older characters, like Starman, accessible to a younger generation. By reimagining the character as a young, high school girl, Stargirl is able to be interesting, current, and transcend generations. Stargirl is one of the youngest superheroes in the current DC universe and this show embraces that, keeping Stargirl innocent and somewhat naive about what it really takes to be a superhero. The show isn’t afraid to portray Stargirl as an actual teenager and show all of the ups and downs that come with navigating those teenage years.

How Does Stargirl Enhance the DC Universe?

Since Starman was the head of the JSA, the new Stargirl must also take on that responsibility. However, with all of the former members dead, Stargirl has her work cut out for her. Introducing new superheroes such as Wildcat, Hourman, and Doctor Midnight, Stargirl is able to become a leader and band the group together. This enables the DC universe to continue the JSA and create future generations of superhero fans.

While there are countless superhero movies and television series out there, Stargirl is a special treat. If you are looking for something the whole family can sit down and enjoy, this is the show for you.
