It’s official: Alamo Drafthouse Mueller in Austin, TX, is now the Matthew McConaughey Cinema, a celebration of the actor, producer, proud Texan, and all-around Austin icon whose work for three decades has kept audiences laughing, chest-thumping, crying, hook ’em horns-ing, and occasionally questioning the nature of existence and dimensional space-time.
From his immortal arrival in DAZED AND CONFUSED to the cosmic emotional wallop of INTERSTELLAR, the hard-won humanity of DALLAS BUYERS CLUB, and the mesmerizing metaphysical intensity of TRUE DETECTIVE, McConaughey has always brought a little Texas to the screen. Born in Uvalde and forged in Austin at the University of Texas, he’s traveled just about everywhere a movie career can take you without ever losing his connection to Austin.
He also joins a pretty incredible group of filmmakers and performers whose names are honored at Alamo Drafthouse theaters, including Bong Joon Ho (South Lamar), Christopher Nolan (San Francisco’s New Mission), Pam Grier (Littleton, CO), Spike Lee (Brooklyn), John Hughes (Chicago), and Ivan Reitman (Lower Manhattan). And with the new cinema just up the road from Darrell K Royal–Texas Memorial Stadium, McConaughey won’t have much of a commute if he’s ever dropping in after a Longhorns practice.
