Strangelove creator and Lolita director Jorge Xolalpa is set to star and co-showrun Grownish?, a new half-hour comedy-drama that will stream on Amazon Prime Video. Xolalpa will co-showrun alongside Yolo Martínez and Felicity Dao, who also join the project as co-producers.
The 8-episode series, produced by Mighty Aphrodite Pictures, is slated to begin production in January 2026, with a late summer 2026 release planned. Rising actor Alexis Vazquez (Lolita) co-stars as Rob, Marco’s former high school ex-boyfriend. Additional cast will be announced soon.
Xolalpa — whose credits include the acclaimed queer drama Strangelove and international festival standout Lolita — continues expanding his footprint across film, television, and literature. The series announcement arrives during a milestone year for the filmmaker, who is currently on a 25-city national book tour for his memoir Ni De Aquí, Ni De Allá, released December 12, 2025. He also recently licensed his entire film catalogue to Lumexx Media, bringing his full library to Apple TV+ for the first time.
Known for championing Latino talent on both sides of the camera, Xolalpa has built a career creating Latino-driven stories that move away from stereotypes—portraying Latinos with nuance, humor, complexity, and emotional depth. Grownish? continues that mission while expanding into comedy-drama territory.
Billed tonally in the vein of Insecure, Fleabag, and High Fidelity, Grownish? follows Marco (Xolalpa) in the wake of a mid-life crisis that forces him to move back home and start over. There, he unexpectedly reconnects with Rob (Vazquez), his high school ex-boyfriend, prompting a comedic and emotional exploration of queer adulthood, heartbreak, reinvention, and what being “grown” really means.
Mighty Aphrodite Pictures, founded by Xolalpa, continues its focus on bold, inclusive, and emotionally grounded storytelling. The company’s slate includes Lolita, Strangelove, Blue Line Station, Valentina, Your Iron Lady, Melancolía, and additional award-winning films now headed to Apple TV+ via Lumexx Media.
